Panoramic Photography Basics

The format of panoramic photography has been gaining popularity in magazines, newspapers, books, different types of brochures and other sales and marketing materials today. This format is characterized by its wide fields of view, its ability to capture images that can be compared to the normal fields of vision by a human eye. Photographs provide one with unhindered views of an area, giving an appearance of a panorama.

But how can one achieve taking amazing panoramic photos? Phone 0845 2222 360 to find out!

This can be done by using various cameras and techniques of panoramic photography. You can use a camera which features a short rotation or swing lens. These are cameras that have rotating lens located at its rear nodal point. Using this type of panoramic photography method provides you with a very wide angle view, like that of a photo taken from fisheye lens without its characteristic extreme line distortions. Another way of getting wide angle photos is by using a full rotation technique. Unlike short rotation cameras which can only take up to 110 to 140 degrees of field of views, rotating panoramic cameras can take up to 360 degree views. The whole camera rotates, thereby providing you with a uniquely panoramic photography technique.

Panoramic photography also uses cameras with fixed lens. This is the most commonly used camera to take panoramic photos. Camera models range from inexpensive APS cameras which provide poor quality photos right up to the professional variety of cameras. Fixed lens cameras are the camera of choice for architectural panoramic photography as it does not cause linear objects to curve. Another technique uses segmented or stitched panoramas. This method connects several conventional photographs which have overlapping fields of view to create a panoramic image. Recent developments on panoramic photography now enable photographers to purchase catadioptric cameras. This type of camera features lenses and curved mirrors that reflect 360 degree fields of view into the camera’s lens-based optics. This camera enables a photographer to shoot dynamic scenes without any problems.

Do not be daunted by the different types of cameras for panoramic photography. No matter how inexpensive or expensive your camera is, you just follow the general three panoramic sequences when shooting your chosen photo object. These are horizontal, vertical and clockwise sequences. Panoramic photography using horizontal sequences are generally for shooting panoramic landscapes, vertical sequences for capturing subjects such as a waterfall or tower, and clockwise or counterclockwise sequences for taking photos of documents or square shapes.

For panoramic photography, extreme lighting should also be avoided such as during sunny days which usually give out dark shadows and bright highlights. If you have the freedom to choose the time of day you need to take a panoramic photo, shoot photographs during midday for an even lighting. Better yet, pick a cloudy day to shoot panoramic photos. If you do not have a choice of the time of day to shoot photos, be sure to position your camera where direct sunlight is effectively blocked by a building or tree when you need to shoot in its direction.
